Xylan ultrafiltration desalination technology

Xylan is a heterogeneous polysaccharide found in the cell walls of plants, accounting for approximately 15% to 35% of the dry weight of plant cells. It is the main component of plant hemicellulose and is a complex polydisaccharide. Partial degradation of xylan can result in the formation of xylooligosaccharides, while complete degradation yields monosaccharides such as xylose, ferulic acid sugar, and arabinose, among which xylose is the predominant one.

Xylooligosaccharides are produced from xylan as a fermentation substrate to obtain xylooligosaccharides and xylose molecules. Due to the presence of a large amount of sodium ions in the xylan extraction solution, which have an inhibitory effect on the bacteria and reduce the biological conversion rate of xylan, and the presence of sodium ions also lowers the final quality of the products. The desalination of the xylan extraction solution can be based on the commonly used ion exchange method for sugar products, but the ion exchange resin process involves subsequent issues such as resin regeneration and eluent treatment, making the process complex and costly.

Ultrafiltration desalination has been widely applied in protein and polysaccharide products. It has low energy consumption and good effect. No high-concentration acid, alkali or salt regeneration is required. During desalination, the xylan extract solution can also be purified.

The ultrafiltration desalination process consists of membrane selection, equipment selection, process operation, endpoint control, etc. Generally, the ultrafiltration desalination process is determined based on factors such as the turbidity of the feed liquid, composition, molecular weight distribution, concentration of the feed liquid, operating conditions, volume of the feed liquid, incoming material method, salt concentration, quality control requirements, and yield requirements.
