The forward osmosis separation process is the spontaneous diffusion of water from the side with higher chemical potential to the side with lower chemical potential under the action of osmotic pressure. This separation process does not require external pressure but is achieved spontaneously through the osmotic pressure difference between the draw solution and the feed solution, enabling membrane separation. The realization of this process requires several necessary conditions: (1) a selective permeable membrane and membrane module that allows water to pass through while retaining other solute molecules or ions; (2) a draw solution that provides the driving force; (3) a re-concentration pathway for the diluted draw solution. Forward osmosis technology has been successfully applied in the treatment of concentrated brine and zero discharge systems, as well as in the separation and purification of special concentrated solutions. It effectively reduces energy consumption and reduces pollution, making full plant zero discharge a reality.
